Serious High Speed Wreck in West San Antonio
A conflux of factors, including aggressive driving, were to blame for an early morning car crash at Lackland Air Force Base that killed one person and seriously injured two others.
The collision took place on Military between Selfridge and Luke, not far from the Parade Grounds. According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, two vehicles were southbound on Military when one driver lost control, struck a curb and then a fence. When the vehicle flipped, all three occupants were ejected. They were rushed to a nearby hospital where two remain; a third victim, a 32-year-old man, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Although there were no witnesses, as the crash took place about 5:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning, officials speculate that a combination of excessive speed, alcohol, and road rage may have caused the collision. Two people were taken into custody facing unspecified charges.
Road Rage
At any given time of the day or night, almost everyone is in a hurry to get somewhere. The government estimates that two-thirds of traffic fatalities are directly attributable to road rage, and nearly 40 percent of these incidents involve a firearm. Equally as disturbingly, 2 percent of people admit that they have attempted to run another driver off the road, and the actual figure is probably much higher.
Road rage can also cause crashes indirectly, since the drivers are focused on their anger and not watching the road as closely as they should be.
Even though no gun is present, road rage is still quite dangerous, because it is the spark that ignites inflamed emotions. Some common aggressive behaviors include:
- Tailgating,
- Horn honking,
- Turning without signaling,
- Changing lanes without checking the blind spot,
- Habitual and excessive speeding, especially when trying to “beat the light,” and
- Using obscene gestures.
As in the above incident, road rage is often combined with another factor, such as alcohol.
If you were injured in a car accident that was at least partially someone else’s fault, due to road rage, intoxication, distracted driving, or anything else, you may be entitled to compensation for both your economic and non-economic damages.
