Are Road Rage Incidents on the Rise in 2025?

Posted on January 10, 2025 in Car Accidents

Comal County, TX personal injury lawyerAt least two road rage incidents have already claimed a life and caused injuries in Texas during the first week of 2025. Road rage is a clear danger to anyone traveling on Texas roadways, and laws do little to limit these behaviors. In 2023, thousands of lives were affected by road rage incidents, and 2025 is already shaping up to be worse.

If you were injured in a car accident caused by road rage, you could qualify for compensation. If your family member died in a road rage incident, you may be eligible to bring a wrongful death action. In either case, working with an experienced Comal County, TX personal injury lawyer significantly increases your chances of a favorable result.

What Is Road Rage?

Many motorists drive aggressively, but road rage takes that to an extreme. Road rage is intentionally using a vehicle or other objects to threaten others on the road. A driver can exhibit road rage in several ways, such as:

  • Hitting another vehicle or forcing it off the road

  • Following another vehicle to its destination

  • Deliberately preventing another vehicle from changing lanes

  • Intentionally following another vehicle too closely to intimidate the driver

  • Throwing objects at another vehicle or shooting or physically assaulting another driver or passenger

Yelling and making rude gestures are also considered road rage, but these behaviors are not as dangerous as others.

Why Does Road Rage Happen?

What prompts road rage? Anything can set a driver off, turning aggressive behaviors into angry, dangerous threats. A car driving below the posted speed limit, someone merging in front of an aggressive driver, or simply driving a car the angry driver does not like can precipitate a road rage incident. A confrontation in a store parking lot may lead to an angry driver following another.

Drivers have privacy and a sense of anonymity in their vehicles, which can lead them to behave differently than they usually would. A perceived slight from another vehicle’s driver or passengers can trigger threatening behaviors, potentially causing injuries and fatalities.

On January 2, one person was killed, and four more were injured in an apparent road rage accident on I-20 in Parker County. The Honda CRV they were traveling in merged in front of a Jeep Wrangler when entering the highway; the Jeep passed the CRV and immediately slowed down, causing the CRV’s driver to lose control after swerving to avoid hitting the Jeep. Witnesses report the Jeep’s driver got out of his vehicle after the wreck, looked at the victims, then fled the scene in his Wrangler.

On January 6, a sedan’s driver shot the driver of a semi-truck while traveling on I-35 in San Antonio, causing a crash. The truck driver was injured, and the driver of the sedan was charged.
